What are Tiers?

I base all my coaching and courses on my Business Growth Framework™️ which identifies four stages of development within interior design businesses, these are: Tier One - Startup; Tier Two - Growing Pains; Tier Three - Maturity; Tier Four - Stardom.

Your design business isn’t a one-size-fits-all operation. Your strategy shouldn’t be either.

I developed the Business Growth Framework™ to reflect what I’ve learned from working with hundreds of interior designers: that business growth in our industry isn’t linear, and it certainly isn’t generic.

Knowing your tier ensures you don’t waste energy on strategies that aren’t built for your stage, and gives you a clear direction of travel if you’re ambitious to grow. Scroll down to read more, and discover how I help designers, from Startup to Stardom.

More About Tiers

This four-tier framework is the backbone of all my programmes and advice. It helps you understand where you are, what you need most right now, and how to move strategically toward your next level of success.

Tier One - Startup

You’re just getting going. Maybe you’ve just qualified or left another career. You’re talented, full of ideas, and completely overwhelmed.

You’re still working out how to price, how to talk to clients, and how to create a reliable business structure that gets you paid.

Operations might look like:

  • Solo working, possibly part-time or around other commitments

  • Quoting by the hour, often undercharging

  • No clear onboarding or service structure yet

  • Portfolio still under development

  • Feast-or-famine client flow

  • DIY website and branding

  • You're hesitant, overwhelmed, and perfectionism is stopping you from moving on

Your focus: get moving. Launch before you’re ready. Learn by doing. Set up your systems, get visible, and start earning. You don't need to be perfect to get started; you need to start to become perfect.

Tier Two - Growing Pains

Yes, you’ve launched, but behind the scenes things are messy; everything you do has to be created from scratch. Projects are happening, but they could be better organised. You’re overworking, undercharging, and firefighting more than planning. But, things are well enough under control for you to take time to backfill and underpin your business, so you can build for the future.

Operations might look like:

  • Inconsistent pricing, scope creep, unpaid overtime

  • No buffer between new enquiries and full service

  • Clients asking too much, testing boundaries

  • No admin support, and no time to plan ahead

  • Relying on word-of-mouth, but no wider marketing

  • Imposter syndrome meets exhaustion

Your focus: install better boundaries, refine your pricing model, define your offer, and protect your time. Tier Two is where you professionalise and get serious.

Tier Three - Maturity

You’re established, profitable, and respected. You make it look easy. You’ve got clients, a solid brand, and work you’re proud of. But growth has stalled. You’re ready for bigger goals, and need to get more intentional. It's time to decide the level of visibility you want as a thought-leader, and the scale of operation you feel comfortable running.

 Operations might look like:

  • Well-structured fees and client journey

  • Projects booked in advance

  • A part-time assistant or regular freelance support, maybe even a permanent staff member or two

  • Confidence in your creative authority

  • Starting to attract press or high-end clients

  • Website and brand starting to feel outdated

Your focus: elevate. Raise your fees, improve your visibility, delegate more, and build a pipeline of projects that energise and excite you.

Tier Four – Stardom

You’re no longer just running a business, you’re leading a brand. This is where you define your legacy. You’re recognised, booked out, and turning down projects that don’t align. Your clients don't have price as a deciding factor, they are attracted by your exclusivity and reputation. You’re thinking about scale, reach, and freedom.

 Operations might look like:

  • Team of staff or regular collaborators

  • Licensing, product lines, or partnerships

  • Media features, awards, thought leadership

  • Steady stream of ideal clients

  • Delegated day-to-day systems

  • Strategy focused on joy, creativity, and legacy

Your focus: you are rain-maker for your business and want to grow it selectively. Say no to everything that doesn’t serve your long-term vision. Share your knowledge. Refine your role.

Why Tiers Matter

Trying to run a Tier One studio with a Tier Four strategy will most likely flop - you haven't yet built an audience that trusts you implicitly, you have little social proof or evidence of notable work.

Trying to grow out of Tier Two without first fine-tuning business planning and marketing, or working on your pricing and boundaries is a recipe for more chaos. You need to work on the business foundations that may have been overlooked at lauch, before you can move on up.

 This framework helps you:

  • - Choose the right priorities for your stage
  • - Avoid “comparisonitis” and mismatched advice
  • - Feel genuine pride in what you've achieved
  • - Set realistic goals with an eye on the next level
  • - Stay motivated by knowing exactly what “up” looks like
