🌟 What is Hothouse?

Hothouse is an interior design business accelerator, helping designers build stronger, more profitable businesses through strategic action, collaboration, and accountability. Each month, we focus on a different key area of professional performance, tracking progress as we go.

We don’t just talk about growing our businesses - we take bold, consistent action to make it happen. 🚀

📅 March Intentions and Focus – Mastering Social Media

This month, we’re taking control of social media.

Too often, marketing feels like an exhausting treadmill - constant posting, yet no real traction. But social media should work for you, helping you attract better clients, build authority, and create opportunities.

In March, we’re:

✅ Reclaiming control – making social media serve our businesses.

✅ Planning ahead – so posting feels effortless, not reactive.

✅ Preparing for Race Day – a fast-track, high-impact day designed to take the pressure off marketing.

Design Week at Design Centre Chelsea Harbour

On Monday, I had my first-ever real-life meet-up with some of my Bootcamp graduates and clients.

It was a reminder of how much the pandemic reshaped our industry - barriers to online connection have been smashed down, and yet, in-person meetings still hold a special kind of magic.

👥 Key Takeaways from Our Discussion:

✔️ Clients want to see the spark of creative inspiration.

✔️ Design is theatre - a well-timed reveal, a compelling story, an air of mystery and magic.

✔️ The best designers perform their designs - they take their clients on a journey, rather than just handing them a mood board.

This meeting inspired my latest blog post on storytelling in design presentations, or as I prefer to call it, design performance.

📝 The Power of Personal Branding – Who Would You Hire?

I shared a personal branding thought experiment on Instagram this week. Here’s another angle on this vitally important marketing strategy:

PERSONAL BRANDING - THOUGHT EXPERIMENT:

Imagine you’ve just won grant funding to hire a top-tier designer to work in your practice. They’re going to give their all to your business - 100% of their creativity, expertise, and industry reputation.

Would you keep them a secret?

Of course not! You’d shout about their arrival from every platform, tell the world, and firmly position them as the face of your business.

💡 But here’s the truth: You are that designer.

Many designers are hiding in their own businesses, expecting clients to find them without stepping forward to meet them halfway. They may be waving at their clients, but who knows what they're saying 🤷‍♀️...some designers aren't even waving!

When clients are choosing between designers, they move towards the one who is most visible, who makes them feel a connection, who is already in the conversation.

For Race Day, we’ll introduce personal branding as a core marketing pillar. In Race Day 1 we'll keep it simple - we'll be building strength in this area over time. Start with us now, at the beginning.

📌 My Week in Hothouse – Measuring Growth, Staying Focused

We’re approaching the end of Q1 2025 - which means I’ll soon be reviewing three months of business growth.

📊 Why I track progress weekly:

✔ It keeps me laser-focused - I can’t imagine working any other way.

✔ If I have an off week, I course-correct immediately.

✔ Seeing real, measurable progress makes me push even harder.

⚡️Three things I remind myself every week:

📍 Success compounds over time - small wins now build into massive growth.

📍 Consistency matters more than immediate results - I press on regardless.

📍 Self-compassion is key - I celebrate action, not outcomes.

This week has been a reasonable week. We are digital nomads and after three weeks ‘at home’, we are on the move again.

This week we packed away our personal possessions and put them into storage, and moved ourselves and our businesses to Istanbul. We took a day out for travel, and the best part of two days for orienting…ok, sightseeing...but tomorrow we'll be back at our desks, pushing forwards. Despite all this disruption, it's thanks to my weekly measuring practice that:

🚀 Momentum continues - my business metrics are growing!

💡 Final Thought – The Art of Presentation

Inspired by this week's blogpost...when preparing a client presentation, don’t start with the visuals.

🎭 First, write the script.

Your presentation should be a story - the journey you've guided your hero clients through: from vision, to concept, to final design. And the challenges the clients met and overcame on the way.

📌 Only once the story is written: create the visuals that support that story.

Which presentation materials do you want to hand, to illustrate the story you're telling?

Many designers waste hours on unnecessary presentation boards because they haven’t first defined the narrative.

📍 Start with the story - then bring it to life.
