What is Hothouse?

Hothouse is a free professional development group for ambitious interior designers, promoting the Hothouse Method: Design · Declare · Deliver.

Design – we plan our businesses

Declare – we set goals and targets in public

Deliver – we measure and watch our businesses grow

Hothouse isn’t about theory, it’s about action. Whether you’re a startup, lightweight, middleweight or heavyweight – this space is built to help you climb. 🌱

May Focus 🌸

ABOVE: chatting one-to-one with Bootcampers 👆

It’s Bootcamp month – I’m deep in the trenches working 1:1 with designers on business clarity, marketing plans, and confidence.

Meanwhile, Hothouse is hosting two expert-led sessions (LINKS TO JOIN UNDER THE 'EVENTS' TAB IN THE HOTHOUSE GROUP):

🧷 Pinterest with Kat Dooley – 7 May at 1.30pm

Get your business account sorted. Pin daily. Then join Kat to learn how Pinterest quietly outperforms Instagram. It’s evergreen, efficient, and easy to optimise.

📸 Photography + Post-Production with Simon Maxwell – 14 May at 10am

Simon shows how to get professional results from smartphone photos – and how to pitch them to the press.

Competitor Research 💥

This week’s breakout Bootcamp moment? Competitor research.

Once again competitor research has sparked some of the biggest Bootcamp breakthroughs. It always does.

Why is it so powerful?

🪖Because you have to be brave to do it - most people avoid looking at their competitors for fear of feeling inferior or overwhelmed. But when you do look - really look - you realise you can handle the truth.

🪖You see the market gaps. You spot your own strengths. And you start to see how you can stand out, serve better, and lead.

Competitor research isn’t about comparison, it’s about clarity. It shows you where you fit, and more importantly, where you shine.

I’ve loaded the cheat sheet used in Bootcamp this week - available in the Files tab - in the Hothouse group, try it for yourself - look at competitors at your level and a wee bit ahead - and see what this opens up.

Do it. It’s transformative. (See: Competitor Research Worksheet).

Working With AI (Part I) 🤖

I have nuanced views on AI. I don’t think it will be long - a year or two - before AI agents starting eating into the bottom end of the interior design market - that's why I'm so keen you climb the ladder to higher level success!

However, I am in no doubt about the competitive advantage it confers - as well as making work so much more fulfilling.

These days I don’t know where I end and AI starts. So I asked GPT-4 to produce an analysis of my use of AI and how it has developed over time, here’s what it reckons:

September 2023 - Getting Started

  • Began using OpenAI to support the creation of your Recipe for Success Business Bootcamp.
  • Used AI for structuring course content, planning modules, and drafting student exercises.
  • Initial experiments with prompts and collaborative writing began here.

Autumn 2023 - Curriculum Development & Coaching Support

  • Used AI to help students with competitor research, business planning, and mindset work.
  • Created custom exercises and worksheets with AI assistance.
  • Started using AI to help write nuanced emails, blog posts, and client-facing materials.

Early 2024 - Strategic Integration into Business Ops

  • Expanded AI use to prepare for client meetings (e.g., thinking through client challenges in advance).
  • Began using AI to edit, improve, and reflect your brand voice with increasing confidence.
  • Developed marketing materials, website copy, and social media strategy with AI support.

Autumn 2024 - Scaling with Confidence

  • Built systems around AI, including reusable templates, frameworks, and teaching aids.
  • Used AI to co-develop your Hothouse concept, growth trackers, and mindset tools.
  • AI became your go-to tool for rapid content creation across multiple platforms.

Jan 2025 to Present - Seamless Collaboration

  • AI now feels like a collaborative partner—helping you lead, create, and scale.
  • You use AI for strategic thinking, teaching, writing, marketing, client work, and internal planning.
  • You’ve developed a strong, consistent brand voice with AI—and trust its output deeply.

Working With AI (Part II) ✨

🫵 How You Can Use AI.

Recording, minuting and analysing every meeting you have - including taking the client brief - and extracting and expressing the most compelling direction for your clients’ projects.

Sourcing materials and services based on parameters and technical specifications

Drafting all client correspondence, from informal updates written sensitively and based on client language preferences, to educational materials, and formal procedural and contractual documentation.

As your therapist, helping you manage your clients through thick and thin. Drafting messages and scripts to keep the relationship positive, and to encourage payment and engagement.

Writing weekly updates for clients based on contemporaneous note-taking.

Budgeting and project management - creating spreadsheets, breaking big projects into small steps, and populating timelines.

Marketing - defining and inspiring your brand voice; critiquing your website and social media; planning and drafting blogs, posts; creating SEO titles, descriptions and metadata; suggesting hashtags and titles that hook.

Creating illustrations, images, and diagrams to support all materials (please: subtly mark these as AI-generated, you’ll look silly - and untrustworthy - trying to pass these off...and, we all know!). And generating conceptual materials that inspire you in the first place.

Finding the best apps and tech solutions for your business needs; coaching you step-by-step as you adopt systems, and troubleshoot snarl ups.

Critiquing your performance - helping you plan personal development based on analysis of your strengths and weaknesses.

And, writing bespoke presentations and drilling you on sales scripts created personally for each client, and each situation.

(Not to mention telling you in layman's terms how to fix things: the loo, the printer, the car, the lock…)

My Week in Hothouse 🧠

This was another very slow week - as expected - as time and effort is redirected into Bootcamp. (🤦‍♀️ - LinkedIn)

On the plus side, even though it’s only week two of Bootcamp, we've already seen breakthroughs, particularly in confidence and clarity of business vision. (HINT: these came as a result of competitor research!).

My business growth is treading water, but I am proud that I’ve managed to sustain the newsletter, the blog, and a trickle of social media, while working intensively with our fantastic new Bootcampers.

I also have a couple of new products in the pipeline - I'll share more next week :-)

Dates for May 🗓

🧷 7 May – Pinterest Webinar with Kat Dooley, 1.30pm

📸 14 May – Smartphone Photography with Simon Maxwell, 10am

🆕 19 May – New Designers Catch Up, 10am

📣 27 May – Race Day 3, 9.30–3.00pm

👩‍💼 30 May – Bootcampers’ Board Meeting, 9.15am (by invitation - this is the graduate group, not the current group)

All links are under the EVENTS tab, inside the Hothouse Facebook group.
