1. What is Hothouse?

Hothouse is a free professional development group for ambitious interior designers, built around the Hothouse Method of Business Growth: Design – Declare – Deliver.

✨ Design – we plan our businesses with care and creativity

✨ Declare – we set bold goals and targets in public

✨ Deliver – we track progress and celebrate results

Hothouse is for designers who want more than inspiration – it’s for those ready to take action.

At the heart of my work is a theory of interior design business evolution. Over time, practices move through four distinct tiers: Tier one - startup; Tier two - growing pains; Tier three - maturity; Tier four - stardom - each with its own challenges, mindset shifts, and growth opportunities.

My coaching is designed to help you level up, to elevate your business with intention, so you’re not simply drifting forward, but actively shaping the next stage of your business.

Wherever you are now - starting out or refining a mature practice - Hothouse brings structure, momentum, and community to help you get to the next level. 🌱

2. How to Work With Me

Whether you’re just starting out or ready to level up, there are several ways we can work together:

📦 Blocks of Consultations

Ideal if you’re working toward a long-term business goal or want consistent support while establishing your studio and working with your first clients. Ask me about my ‘6 for the price of 5’ offer.

🚀 Business in a Box

A structured, supported 90-day programme designed to help you launch your new interior design business with clarity, confidence, and strong foundations. Get in touch to be added to the waitlist.

📈 Recipe for Success Bootcamp

My flagship business planning course, blending one-to-one coaching with peer group sessions. Designed to help you push up into the next tier of business evolution – with a clear plan, defined targets, and the momentum to grow. Drop me a line if you’d like to join the waitlist.

3. 🚦 The Big Push: Ten Weeks to Clear a Roadblock

Earlier this week we launched The Big Push - a ten-week challenge to help interior designers address their biggest business roadblock before year-end.

I wrote about business roadblocks here a couple of weeks ago. By roadblocks I mean challenges that, if you removed them, would unlock a new level of business success. Your roadblock might be, for example, a weak link in your sales funnel, or substandard paperwork, maybe your fees are too low, or perhaps you lack confidence and this badly affects your performance.

The idea is simple: identify one small tweak you can make, set an achievable target that forces change in your business, commit to it publicly, and track your progress until mid-December. A team of us is gathering to do this together, in a spirit of accountability and support. Our aim is that we'll then dive straight into 2026 with renewed energy and focus...harnessing all of that lovely '1 Jan' energy!

This initiative is rooted in something I experienced in Q4 last year: by setting a forcing target and measuring progress weekly, I believe I have compressed two years of growth into one.

If you'd like to join us - share your declaration under the pinned (featured) post in the Hothouse group, and I'll add you to the Register of Declarations, and be in touch later next week with the full plan.

DEADLINE: Monday 6 October, 17h00 UK.

4. 📈 This Week’s Blog: Marketing Takes 6-12 Months to Land

Are you secretly worried your marketing isn’t working?

The truth is, it probably is, it's just too early to see the results.

In this week’s blog, I break down what really happens in those first 6-12 months of consistent marketing effort, and how to recognise the small wins before the big breakthroughs arrive.

Managing your expectations around marketing will make you happier, and less likely to lose faith and call time on a strategy that would ultimately deliver.

5. 🛡 Armour and Self-Defence

This week on Instagram I shared a Bootcamp concept that’s become a cornerstone of good practice: protecting your business (and your sanity) through Armour and Self-Defence. The carousel shares tips on the advance prep you can do to protect your business, and to respond appropriately in the heat of the moment.

It’s about boundaries, clarity, and structure, the invisible scaffolding that lets creativity thrive.

6. ⚖️ Coming Up in Hothouse - Contracts and Terms & Conditions

🗓️ Save the date:

Thursday 16 October, 1.30 pm UK

Join me and commercial lawyer Meriel Pymont for a live, online conversation about how to legally protect your design business.

You’ll find the link under the Events tab in the Hothouse group.

7. 💼 Who Do You Think You’re Talking To?

This week I also posted a reminder of one of Hothouse’s most popular cheat sheets – exploring the professional backgrounds of high-net-worth clients.

When a designer doesn't really understand what their client does for a living, they risk seeming naive or incurious - missing vital context about the pressures and priorities that shape that client’s lifestyle.

Understanding their world helps you meet them as an equal, converse with confidence, and design homes that reflect who they really are.

8. 🌱 My Week in Hothouse

After weeks of launching new projects and shifting gears, I’m rediscovering the quiet strength of steady application. I’ve been preparing to teach my first BIID workshop on using AI in design businesses (this Wednesday!) while also turning my attention to Meta Ads – my personal Big Push focus for Q4.

I've got three months left to do something bold: grow my mailing list to 1,000 names by 31 December. It might be a stretch (a bit of an understatement!) but I'm all in. These days I care less about guaranteed outcomes, and more about showing up fully. I've discovered I'm kind of addicted to trying!

It’s a reminder that growth doesn’t come from frantic bursts of activity, but from consistency. Each action, each post, each plan builds invisible momentum until the results finally become visible.

9. ✨ Final Thought

Lately, I’ve realised there’s something oddly liberating about just committing to the slog. Even enjoying it.

Not for the outcome, not for the applause, just because it’s what you’ve chosen to do.

Once you stop pinning everything on the success of a single post or campaign, it all gets a bit lighter. You show up, do the work, and get on with your day.

What even is that? It’s a new feeling for me...maybe a kind of flow, being 'in the zone'. Whatever it is, it feels really good.

Very best wishes

Julia

Hothouse #55 - From Energy to Engine
Welcome to February. If you measured your business through January - tracked your activity, and benchmarked yourself against a plan -  you’ve already completed one twelfth of the year. That matters. Not because January was perfect, but because momentum has begun. This is the point where intention starts to harden into habit. Do this for another month or two and the effort required drops away - ...
Hothouse #54 - Building For The Year, Not The Month
Welcome 👋 If this week’s issue feels a little more boardroom than moodboard, that’s intentional. January is our final check on strategy and planning before heading out into the year. We’re making sure the foundations are sound, the numbers are understood, and the person at the helm knows where they’re going - and why. This isn’t about turning designers into accountants. It’s about making sure t...
